🗺️ Adachi Museum of Art
🎨 Attraction Gallery
📝 Introduction
It has attracted attention both domestically and internationally due to its extensive collection of Japanese paintings and its garden, which is considered the best in Japan.
📖 Details
The museum was established by entrepreneur Adachi Zenko, who was born in Anrai City, Shimane Prefecture. It houses approximately 2,000 items, including works by modern Japanese painters such as Yokoyama Taikan, Takeuchi Seiho, Uemura Shoen, Hashimoto Gakyu, and Sakakibara Shihou, as well as ceramics and wood carvings, which are gradually being displayed to the public.
Notably, the Japanese garden within the museum is exceptional; since 2003, it has been ranked as Japan's top garden by a specialized American magazine on Japanese gardens. Located around the museum, the main courtyard features a karesansui (dry landscape) garden, a moss garden, and a pond garden, covering an expansive area of 50,000 tsubo. The white sand and green pine garden, modeled after a famous work by Yokoyama Taikan, is particularly renowned.
Adachi Zenko's principle is to "make the garden a painting as well," which is why a dedicated garden master and staff conduct about an hour of maintenance every morning. Additionally, the "Ikegaki" (living hanging scroll) and "Ikebako" (living framed painting) are must-see attractions, where the scenery of the garden appears as if it is presented in a hanging scroll or painting through the hollowed-out walls of the alcove.
The exhibitions change four times a year, allowing visitors to enjoy different displays in each season. The newly added "Ruzan Hall" in 2020 houses many ceramic and painting works by Kitaōji Rosanjin.
