📝 Introduction
Revered as "the gently sloping and long red Mount Akagi," it is one of the Three Mountains of Kamiko.
📖 Details
Revered as "the gently sloping and long red Mount Akagi," its foothills are second only to Mount Fuji in length. Centered around the main peak, Mount Kurobi (1,828 meters), several peaks surround the caldera, collectively known as Mount Akagi. It has been deeply revered by the public since ancient times, with many Akagi shrines located around its foothills. In winter, the unique northern winds (Kūbō) of the Kanto region are referred to here as "Akagi Rakanbō."
Within the central caldera lies a picturesque large pond. The Daō Akagi Shrine is situated on a small island, shaped like a peninsula, that rises above the lake's surface. It is one of the many Akagi shrines across the country, with over 300 in total. The shrine's origins trace back to primitive mountain worship. Additionally, records indicate that the shrine was relocated here from Kamikura Mountain in the first year of the Daidō era (806). It is said that the name "Daō" is also related to this era. All eight trailheads of Mount Akagi feature torii gates donated by local residents, and in Heisei 18 (2006), a celebration was held for the 1,200th anniversary of the shrine's relocation.
Since ancient times, it has been known as a shrine that fulfills women's wishes, originating from a legend about a beautiful daughter of the nobility who was exiled to Ueno Province on unfounded charges. It is said that women who make wishes to the deity of Akagi will have their desires granted and give birth to beautiful daughters.
