🏨 Azumi Setoda

Setoda Port on Ikuchijima Island was once a maritime transportation hub in the Seto Inland Sea. The Horinouchi family, who prospered in the local shipping and salt-making industries, transformed their historic residence into a ryokan (Japanese inn) in March 2021. This project was spearheaded by renowned hotelier Adrian Zecha, who aimed to provide a warm, family-like hospitality experience while prioritizing a rich connection with the local community. Architect Fumio Miura, an expert in Sukiya-zukuri (a style of Japanese architecture), meticulously preserved the precious beams, columns, and designs from the original structure built in 1876 during the renovation. The resulting space is a harmonious blend of simplicity and high quality, creating an open atmosphere that beautifully balances Japanese and Western styles, tradition and modernity, as well as light and shadow. The guest rooms offer a comfortable space that combines the beauty of a ryokan with a sense of leisure. The first-floor rooms feature a traditional Japanese mini garden (hakoniwa), while the second-floor rooms include a terrace for relaxation after bathing. Additionally, there are loft-style rooms equipped with a traditional Japanese heating system known as "kotatsu." Dinner focuses on French cuisine centered around the abundant vegetables of Setoda, served on dishes passed down through the generations of the Horinouchi family. Guests can appreciate the chef's love for local ingredients while enjoying the exquisite flavors. At the ryokan, guests can also engage in a variety of activities that allow them to experience the nature, history, and culture of Setoda.
