⛩️ Buddha Light Temple
🎨 Shrine Gallery
📝 Introduction
The main temple of the True Sect of the Buddha's Light located near the bustling area.
📖 Details
The head temple of the Jodo Shinshu Honganji sect. It is famous for being associated with Shinran Shonin, the founder of Jodo Shinshu, who returned to Kyoto after receiving a pardon from his exile in Echigo and built a grass hut in Yamashina in 1212 as its origin.
In 1320, the temple's foundation was moved to its current location near the Kyoto National Museum, gaining widespread faith among the public. However, most of the temple buildings were destroyed during the Onin War. In 1586 (Tenshō 14), it was relocated to its present site under the orders of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In recent years, as a temple located in the bustling area of Kyoto, it has become a spiritual refuge for people living in the chaotic modern society.
Inside the temple, there is a café and shop in collaboration with D&DEPARTMENT Kyoto, allowing visitors to enjoy dining and shopping in an environment filled with the charm of Kyoto. This place is also known for its beautiful shidarezakura (weeping cherry blossoms), making it a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing, where one can immerse themselves in a dreamy atmosphere during spring.
