📝 Introduction

The head temple of the Nichiren sect of Buddhism. The beautiful sight of cherry blossoms against the five-storied pagoda is captivating.

📖 Details

Ikegami Honmonji is the head temple of the Buddhist sect Nichiren Shū. This historically significant temple is also the sacred site where the founder of Nichiren Shū, Nichiren Shōnin, attained nirvana. The temple has safeguarded the sacred lamp of Nichiren Shōnin for over 700 years. Climbing the 96 stone steps of "Kigyo Nanshi Saka," one arrives at the "Nio Mon," both of which are recognized as important historical buildings and cultural heritage sites. The temple's five-story pagoda was built in 1608 and is an important national cultural heritage. Notably, the temple is home to the rare cherry blossom variety "Sasabe Zakura," and in spring, visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the cherry blossoms weaving together with the five-story pagoda. To commemorate the anniversary of Nichiren Shōnin's passing, the temple holds the "Go-e Shiki" memorial service from October 11 to 13 each year. Especially on the night of the 12th, a grand procession called "Mantō Renkō" takes place, elevating the atmosphere of the memorial activities to a spectacular climax.
