📝 Introduction

A super energy attraction that is only an 8-minute walk from Hakata Station.

📖 Details

There are a total of 2,129 shrines dedicated to the deity Sumiyoshi no Ōkami across Japan, and it is said that the "Chikuzen-kuni Ichinomiya Sumiyoshi Shrine" is the first among these shrines. The deity is also mentioned in the "Nihon Shoki" (Chronicles of Japan) and has a history of over 1,800 years as the Ichinomiya of the Shikinai Meishin Taisha in Chikuzen Province. The shrine enshrines various deities, including the god of navigation and the stars, as well as the purification deity that cleanses body and mind. Since ancient times, it has had a deep connection with sumo. Every year before the Grand Sumo Kyushu Tournament, a "Dohyo-iri" (ring entering ceremony) is held, organized by the Japan Sumo Association. The shrine grounds, covering an area of 8,107 tsubo, feature many highlights, including precious buildings and sacred trees. The main shrine hall, constructed in the ancient architectural style known as "Sumiyoshi-zukuri," is designated as an Important Cultural Property by the national government. The "Omiya no Ki" (sacred tree) known as "Ichiyamatsu," which is believed to bless future generations with prosperity and longevity, creates a mysterious atmosphere that draws attention. It is said that touching different parts of the "Ebisu statue" can bring various blessings, and the "Ancient Rikishi statue" grants strength when both hands are touched, so visitors are encouraged to touch them to seek blessings. Located just an 8-minute walk from Hakata Station, the Sumiyoshi Shrine is a tranquil oasis in the urban center, serving as a place for locals to relax. Throughout the year, the shrine hosts various festivals and events, including the spring "Ota Matsuri" for praying for a bountiful harvest, the summer "Nagoshi no O-matsuri" for purification and cleansing of the heart, and the "Reitaisai" held in October.
