⛩️ Chongfu Temple
🎨 Shrine Gallery
📝 Introduction
The temple, which is Nobunaga's ancestral temple, is highly protected.
📖 Details
Built in 1511, this temple belongs to the Myoshinji branch of the Rinzai sect. After Oda Nobunaga moved to Gifu in 1567, he established it as a place of enlightenment and provided protection for it.
In the garden, visitors can pay their respects at the "Oda Nobunaga Father and Son Shrine," which enshrines the tablets of Nobunaga and his son Nobutada. During the "Incident at Honnō-ji," Nobunaga and his son Nobutada were betrayed and killed by Akechi Mitsuhide. Nobunaga's concubine, Kichō, sent their remains to Sōfuku-ji. Every year on the first Saturday of November, the "Gifu Nobunaga Festival" is held, and on that day, the temple also conducts a "Memorial Service for Lord Oda Nobunaga."
The "Blood Ceiling" in the main hall is also a precious historical material that conveys the history of the Sengoku period. Nobunaga's grandson, Hidenobu, joined the Western Army led by Ishida Mitsunari during the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, which led to a fierce attack on Gifu Castle by the Eastern Army. To commemorate the soldiers who died in that battle, the floorboards from Gifu Castle were laid on the ceiling of Sōfuku-ji's main hall. To this day, traces of blood can still be seen on the wooden boards, highlighting the intensity of the battle at that time.
