Edo Castle is the largest castle in Japan and was once the residence and operational base of the shoguns during the Edo period. Part of the castle site is now the Imperial Palace. Aside from areas for the royal family, it is open to the general public for visits. Popular tourist attractions include the castle gates, towers, ruins, and natural parks. The castle grounds are quite extensive, and it would take a whole day to explore all the areas.

Edo Castle was originally built before the Edo period and underwent over 30 years of renovation and expansion to become a massive fortress. Part of the castle is now the Imperial Palace. Visitors can explore historical buildings designated as Important Cultural Properties, such as the castle gates and towers.
