📖 Gono Line

The JR Gonō Line connects Higashi-Noshiro Station in Akita Prefecture to Kawabe Station in Aomori Prefecture, spanning approximately 147 kilometers of local railway. The route runs along the Sea of Japan coast, offering breathtaking views of the Tōhoku region that leave travelers in awe. Taking a leisurely ride on the local train and enjoying the swaying journey is a unique pleasure, especially recommended is the "Resort Shirakami" train. The "Resort Shirakami" is a sightseeing train that operates between Akita Station, Hirosaki Station, and Aomori Station via the Ōu Main Line and Gonō Line. Not only can passengers enjoy the scenic views from the windows, but they can also get off to take a stroll along the coast. The train also hosts various activities, including live performances of Tsugaru shamisen and folk songs such as "Tsugaru Jouhara Kawa-bushi." There are shops and onboard sales of station bento and local delicacies, allowing travelers to savor delicious food while enjoying the beautiful scenery outside. The Resort Shirakami operates daily during the sightseeing season from spring to autumn, with three round trips each during peak season. In winter, it mainly runs on weekends, approximately three days a week. All seats are reserved, so it is recommended to confirm your itinerary and make a reservation in advance.
