🏨 Hakone Onsen Chōjukan

📝 Introduction

A secluded hot spring inn. The guest rooms and other buildings have been designated as registered tangible cultural properties of the country.

📖 Details

It is said that "Fashi Onsen" was discovered by Kobo Daishi during his travels across Japan. "Fashi Onsen Chōjukan" is the only secret hot spring inn in the Fashi Onsen area, located within the Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park. The inn was established in 1875 and features the "Main Building," which retains traces of literary figures from the Meiji era, as well as the "Annex," built in 1940, both of which are registered as tangible cultural properties. In addition to the rooms in the Main Building and Annex, there are also spacious accommodations in the Kunsansou and the Hōrōden, completed in Heisei 1 (1989), allowing guests to choose according to their needs. The inn has three baths where guests can enjoy naturally flowing hot springs. In a building over a century old styled after the Rokumeikan, there is a unique traditional mixed bathing area called "Fashi no Yu" (open for women from 20:00 to 22:00), as well as an outdoor bath called "Tamaki no Yu," which alternates between men and women and is housed in a building made entirely of cypress wood. Additionally, there is "Chōjū no Yu," located by the Fashi River, which also alternates usage between men and women. Both "Fashi no Yu" and "Chōjū no Yu" are open to outside guests for day-use, and the hot spring packages that include meals are very popular. The meals are based on the principles of safety and security, using local ingredients from Gunma Prefecture such as Joshu beef, Joshu pork, and Akagi chicken, allowing guests to savor seasonal flavors. A variety of locally brewed sake from Gunma Prefecture is also available. Additionally, there is "Fashi Coffee" for enjoying coffee time and a "Gift Shop (お土産処)" offering many exclusive original products.

Guests can enjoy natural hot springs that are said to have been discovered by the famous monk Kōbō Daishi. The "Hōshi no Yu" and "Chōju no Yu" baths are open for outside guests to enjoy on the same day. The cuisine, which features a large amount of local ingredients, is the establishment's signature offering.
