📖 Details

The Itsukushima Shrine, built on the island known as "Shinto Island" by the Japanese, is the most famous seaside shrine in Japan. It is said to have been established by the powerful clan leader Saeki Kuramochi in the first year of Emperor Suiko's reign (593 AD), primarily dedicated to the three goddesses: Ichikishimahime no Mikoto, Tagitsuhime no Mikoto, and Takarihime no Mikoto, who are revered as the deities of the sea, transportation, wealth, and the arts. It is believed that they can bless visitors with the fulfillment of various wishes. Most of the buildings within the shrine precincts, including the main hall, have been designated as national treasures and important cultural properties. The large torii gate in the sea completed a major renovation in 2022, which spanned three and a half years, presenting a vibrant red color and showcasing a more stunning appearance. The nighttime illumination lasts from sunset until 11 PM, creating a dreamlike atmosphere where the shrine reveals a mysterious landscape filled with fantastical colors, distinct from the daytime view. The shopping street leading to the Itsukushima Shrine, known as Miyajima Omotesando, is very lively, with numerous eateries along the street offering Hiroshima specialties such as oysters and momiji manju. After worshipping, visitors can indulge in delicious food at the shopping street.
