🏨 Kawabata Yasunari Izu Dancer Yumoto-kan
🎨 Hotel Gallery
📝 Introduction
The hot spring inn where Kawabata Yasunari stayed while writing "The Izu Dancer."
📖 Details
Yunoshima is a tranquil hot spring area located by the banks of the Kano River in the Amagi Mountains. Several ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) are scattered throughout the lush green forest, among which Yumoto-kan is the most famous, as Nobel Prize-winning author Yasunari Kawabata wrote "The Izu Dancer" here. This ryokan retains the ancient charm of traditional Japanese inns, and the moment you step into the entrance, it feels like a time travel, immersing you in a nostalgic atmosphere. The walls are adorned with paintings and photographs of dancers, and the romantic world of Japanese literature is everywhere, even in the rooms.
Kawabata was very fond of this ryokan and often sat on the stairs where students in his novel watched the dancers. He also wrote, "After graduating from university in 1924, I stayed at Yumoto-kan for about six months to a year." Around this time, he completed "The Izu Dancer," inspired by his memories of traveling alone in Izu during high school, and it was published in 1926.
In the open-air hot spring bath facing the Kano River, guests can enjoy the natural beauty and the sounds of birds and flowers while soaking in the hot springs. Additionally, because it can be reserved for exclusive use, guests can enjoy this breathtaking view all to themselves.
