📖 Details
The Akita Kanto Festival is a traditional festival in Akita with a history of 270 years, designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Japan, and is one of the "Three Great Festivals of Tohoku." It takes place over four days from August 3 to 6, divided into "Daytime Kanto" and "Nighttime Official Event," held at the Kanto Dori in Akita City (Daytime Kanto occurs from August 4 to 6).
The Akita Kanto Festival features long bamboo poles that symbolize rice ears, with lanterns hanging from the poles representing rice bags, known as "Kanto." These are lifted by the incredibly strong "Kanto performers," praying for a bountiful harvest. The largest pole, called "O-Waka," is 12 meters long and holds a total of 46 lanterns, weighing up to 50 kilograms! The performers skillfully balance the Kanto on their hands, foreheads, shoulders, and waists while moving, showcasing incredible techniques that should not be missed.
During the Daytime Kanto, there is also a "Kanto Skill Competition," where individual and group participants display their remarkable skills. It is a must-see for those who want to enjoy the impressive techniques of the performers. Additionally, the Nighttime Official Event, where the lanterns are lit, is beautifully dreamlike. With the sound of flutes, about 280 Kanto are raised simultaneously, creating a breathtaking atmosphere. If you want to fully enjoy the performances, it is recommended to reserve paid seating in advance.
Various activities, including a Kanto experience area, are also held near the venue, so be sure to check them out as well.
