🎨 Hotel Gallery
📝 Introduction
A villa built in the early Showa period, featuring a uniquely elegant space.
📖 Details
Yamada Bessou is located near the transportation hub "Beppu" Station in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, just an 8-minute walk from either "Beppu" Station or the "Beppu Kitahama" bus stop. Although it is situated in the city center of Beppu, the environment is tranquil, resembling a villa hidden within the bustling city. Originally built in 1930 as a merchant's villa, Yamada Bessou was transformed into an inn after World War II and has been operated as a ryokan for several generations.
The building features a popular blend of Japanese and Western architectural styles from that era. The lobby resembles a European-style living room, with decorative elements such as cement reliefs and light fixtures on the ceiling that still retain their original appearance, making it the most representative space of the inn's character. The guest rooms are decorated in a purely Japanese style, featuring alcoves (tokonoma) and other decorations that allow guests to experience the unique ambiance and aesthetics of traditional Japanese culture. The ryokan is favored by local cultural figures and artists, and it also attracts many overseas visitors.
The inn offers a source-flowing hot spring that draws water directly from the spring, featuring an outdoor hot spring that is rich in natural beauty, as well as an indoor hot spring adorned with vintage-style tiles. The outdoor hot spring is available for private bookings, allowing guests to relax and quietly enjoy the hot spring, known for its skin-beautifying properties. Reservations are required for the outdoor bath.
Due to its location in the center of Beppu City, which has numerous restaurants, the ryokan intentionally does not provide dinner. However, breakfast features Japanese cuisine made with carefully selected fresh seasonal local ingredients.
