About Jissenkan (Jissenkan)

Japan's oldest wooden hot spring inn is said to be the inspiration for the bathhouse in the Studio Ghibli animated film.

Details

Sekizenkan was founded in 1694 (the 7th year of Genroku) and is the oldest existing wooden hot spring inn in Japan, designated as an important cultural property of Gunma Prefecture. It is said to be the prototype for the bathhouse in Studio Ghibli's animated films. The "Shima Onsen" where Sekizenkan is located is named for the legend that it can cure 40,000 kinds of ailments, and it is also praised as one of Japan's three major hot springs known for improving gastrointestinal diseases. The main building of the inn consists of three structures: "Honkan," "Sansou," and "Kasyoutei." The Honkan still retains the architectural style of the original hot spring therapeutic inn. Guests can experience the unique "Yuuji culture" of Japan by making their own beds and enjoying the atmosphere. Sansou and Kasyoutei offer rooms with outdoor baths, allowing guests to fully enjoy high-quality hot springs in a spacious and comfortable environment, leisurely spending luxurious and serene relaxation time. The cuisine varies by building. Honkan focuses on "food therapy," providing a healthy dining menu that allows the body to be nurtured from within. Sansou and Kasyoutei offer authentic kaiseki cuisine, featuring carefully selected local ingredients with around ten dishes. Additionally, there are seasonal limited kaiseki meals that allow guests to savor seasonal specialties, as well as "Omakase kaiseki," showcasing the chef's exquisite culinary skills.
