📝 Introduction

Delicious cookies baked with simple ingredients, bringing out a rustic and traditional flavor.

📖 Details

The 8-shaped cake is a type of wagashi that has been beloved by the people of Shizuoka for many years, shaped like the number "8." It is baked using simple ingredients such as flour, sugar, and eggs, characterized by its delightful aroma and crispy texture. KAKUZEN Kuwanaya, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, is a wagashi shop that has been in operation since the Meiji era. After World War II, they officially inherited the production method of a confection originally known as "Megane-yaki" (Eyeglass Cake) and improved it to create the current "8-shaped cake." Until around 1965, the 8-shaped cake was sold in 18-liter cans, indicating its popularity. Since then, the 8-shaped cake has continued to be refined, resulting in the "crispy and melt-in-your-mouth" texture we know today. In 2019, it was chosen by the citizens of Shizuoka as the recipient of the Shizuoka Aoi Award, representing a specialty of Shizuoka Prefecture. The secret to the popularity of the 8-shaped cake lies in its simple deliciousness. When it comes into contact with moisture, the perfectly balanced sweetness spreads in the mouth as the cake melts. It pairs wonderfully with coffee, tea, or milk, making it hard to resist having one bite after another. In addition to the original flavor, the 8-shaped cake also comes in strawberry and roasted tea flavors. There are also 8-shaped cookies available in honey and Shizuoka aged green tea flavors. The number 8 symbolizes "infinity" and also represents good luck, making it a very popular souvenir.
