Shōeidō is located on the south side of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, with a sukiya-style exterior marking its main store in Kyoto. In July 2018, in conjunction with the opening of the Japanese incense culture transmission center "Kinkōkan," the store also completed renovations.
Shōeidō has a history of over 300 years since its establishment. The store offers a variety of products including incense for religious use, aromatic woods and kneaded incense for tea ceremonies, as well as incense sticks, incense bags, and more for tatami rooms.
The manufacturing of incense showcases traditional techniques while actively incorporating the latest technology. Most of the raw materials are natural fragrances, including aromatic substances known as kanpō (漢方) materials, such as agarwood, sandalwood, and cinnamon sourced from China, India, and Southeast Asian countries. Additionally, new fragrances have been created to align with modern lifestyles.
Incense that is directly ignited comes in three forms: stick incense, cone incense, and coil incense. Other products include incense bags, bookmarks, and insect-repelling incense; selecting according to purpose and lifestyle adds to the enjoyment. Seasonal products are also launched, ensuring that there are new discoveries with each visit. Furthermore, a variety of incense tools such as incense burners are readily available.
At the Kyoto main store and the Osaka Honmachi store, incense bags made on-site are also sold. Customers can choose their favorite fragrance from three options and select from plain or patterned pouches for customization. Why not try the challenge of making a unique incense bag that is exclusively yours?
