About Tang Mashi Main Store, Senbatsu Front Street Branch

A long-established Japanese confectionery shop selling the famous Hakone specialty "Yumochi."

Details

"Yumochi Honpo Senbon" is a traditional Japanese sweets shop located in front of Hakone Yumoto Station. "Senbon" is a well-established brand with a 70-year history, founded in Hakone, and has its main store on the waterfall street in Hakone Yumoto. The shop's confections are made without food additives, focusing on creating sweets that highlight the natural flavors of the ingredients. The specialty "Yumochi" features a soft mochi skin made from shiratama flour and egg whites, filled with small pieces of yokan (sweet red bean jelly) and infused with the fragrance of yuzu. Yumochi has also been designated as a famous confection of Kanagawa Prefecture. In addition, there are other sweets that reflect the characteristics of Hakone, such as "Yasato" and "Yogoro Shinobu." The "Yasato" confection is shaped like the bells worn by the horsemen depicted in the folk song "Hakone Uma Ko Uta," which includes the lyrics "Although the horse can cross the eight้‡Œ of Hakone..." The sweet is filled with a generous amount of red bean paste and tied with red, purple, and white strings, giving it a very cute appearance. The "Yogoro Shinobu" confection is themed around an event involving one of the loyal retainers from the famous story of Chushingura, Kanazaki Yogoro, who encountered an incident at a tea house on the mountain path in Hakone while heading to attack the Kira estate. The mochi skin is shaped like a tsuba (sword guard) and is aromatic, filled with red bean paste. The shop also sells warabi mochi, kusa dango, Japanese steamed buns, and seasonal limited sweets, offering a wide variety. The shop features a tea room where customers can enjoy a set that includes the shop's proud wagashi and matcha, as well as desserts like red bean soup, sweet red beans, and shaved ice. Next to the shop, there is a small outdoor stall called "Garden Tea Shop," where visitors can also enjoy a set of Yumochi and tea or order drinks individually. It is recommended to stop by here for tea and snacks while taking a stroll.
