About Yanaka Matsunoya
Encounter the enduringly beloved "arawamono" in life.
Details
"Yanaka Matsunoya" is a store specializing in daily life groceries. It opened in 1945 in Tokyo's Bakurocho, originally as a manufacturer and wholesaler of bags. After expanding its business, it transformed into a wholesaler of "arawamono" (general daily necessities). In 2010, it opened a retail store in Yanaka's Sunset Stairs, targeting the general public.
The current owner, Mr. Nohiro, operates under the philosophy of "products that do not burden the producers," traveling across Japan to select items and even sourcing from abroad. In addition to its own brand, the store features simple tools made by local factories and rural artisans.
The charm of "arawamono" lies in its affordable prices and practicality. Simple and useful items like brooms, dustpans, tin rice containers, and wicker shopping baskets are widely loved tools in everyday life.
The owner's wife, Ms. Kinuko, also occasionally holds mobile workshops for making dusters. As modern people focus on sustainable living, the acceptance of traditional and easy-to-use arawamono groceries is becoming increasingly widespread.
