📖 Details

Eihei-ji is the head temple of the Sōtō school of Zen Buddhism in Japan. Founded by Zen Master Dōgen in the second year of the Kangen era (1244) as a place for zazen meditation practice, it covers an expansive area of approximately 330,000 square meters. The temple complex features over 70 halls and buildings, with seven main structures, where more than a hundred monks dedicate themselves to daily practice. Among the buildings open for worship are the Shōyō-den, which enshrines Zen Master Dōgen, and the Butsuden, which houses the main deity, Shakyamuni Buddha. Not to be missed is the "Kasamatsu-kaku," a large hall known for its "painted ceiling room," adorned with over 230 ceiling paintings. Eihei-ji offers zazen experience sessions three times a day. Zazen is an essential part of daily practice, and anyone can participate in these experiences. Additionally, joining the morning service known as "sōka" allows participants to personally experience the chanting led by a dozen monks.
