🗺️ Enoshima Iwaya江の島岩屋
About Enoshima Iwaya
Head to the magnificent sea caves shaped by nature.
Details
The deepest cave in Enoshima is a cavern formed by the erosion of sea waves. It is said that the great monk Kōbō Daishi and Nichiren Shōnin practiced here, and Minamoto no Yoritomo also visited to pay his respects while campaigning against the Fujiwara clan in Oshu. From the entrance to the cave, you can enjoy a view of the vast ocean and Mount Fuji in the background from the Iwaya Bridge, which has red railings—an absolutely stunning sight not to be missed.
After enjoying the breathtaking mountain and sea views, head into the cave. The cave is divided into the First Iwaya and the Second Iwaya. The First Iwaya, which is about 152 meters long, houses a shrine considered to be the origin of Enoshima Shrine, along with several historic stone statues. You can also see a place that is said to be connected to the ice caves of Mount Fuji. Next is the Second Iwaya, which is approximately 56 meters long. During the winter light festival, enchanting lights illuminate the cave, creating a dreamlike scene as the light reflects off the rock walls. Continuing further, you can see the Dragon God. All activities are seasonal, so it is recommended to check the schedule of events before visiting.
