About Jukeimachi Chaya Street
Strolling along the narrow alleys by the riverside and the streets lined with quaint teahouse buildings.
Details
The Takemachi Chaya District, along with Higashi Chaya District and Nishi Chaya District, is one of Kanazawa's three major tea house districts, extending along the Asano River. The winding alleys and tea houses with their thousand lattice windows create a tranquil and elegant atmosphere, and it has been designated as an important preservation district for traditional buildings. The name originates from the Edo period, where a person named "Tomita Shukei," who held a fief of over ten thousand koku, lived here; his wife was the granddaughter of the first lord of the Kaga Domain, Maeda Toshiie. It is worth mentioning that the Takemachi Chaya District frequently appears in the works of the literary giant "Izumi Kyoka."
On both sides of the road, traditional ryotei and tea houses stand tall, creating a dreamlike atmosphere when the lanterns are lit at sunset. The sounds of shamisen and taiko drums played by geisha, seemingly coming from nowhere, add to the enchanting ambiance. Compared to the other two tea house districts in Kanazawa, the Takemachi Chaya District is smaller and more charming, allowing visitors to leisurely stroll and relax. The area also features unique spots like "Kurayama" (Dark Hill), which is not illuminated by sunlight during the day, and "Akizaka" (Bright Hill), named by the writer Hiroshi Itsuki, offering delightful experiences for those walking the streets. Additionally, this area is the hometown of one of Kanazawa's three great literary figures, Izumi Kyoka, and a memorial museum has been established at his birthplace.
Highlights
Compared to the other two tea house districts in Kanazawa, the Higashiyama Tea House District has a calm and quiet atmosphere. In spring, rows of cherry blossom trees along the riverside are in full bloom. This area is the hometown of one of Kanazawa's three great literary figures, Izumi Kyōka, and a memorial museum has been established at his birthplace.
