About Hakodate Meijikan
A shopping center transformed from an old brick post office entwined with ivy.
Details
The harbor area of Hakodate is famous for tourism. One of the commercial facilities in this area, "Hakodate Meijikan," gathers several shops selling Hakodate souvenirs.
With its solid red brick exterior reminiscent of the Meiji era and ivy that seems to cover the entire wall, this impressive building is a renovated former post office constructed in Meiji 44 (1911). In addition to the vivid contrast between the red bricks and green leaves in spring and summer, the ivy turns a fiery red in autumn, and the winter landscape is adorned with white snow. The illuminated scenery at night showcases different beautiful aspects throughout the seasons and times of day, making it a popular photo spot.
Inside the two-story building, shops selling glass products, music boxes, and exclusive Hakodate items line up, making it convenient for purchasing souvenirs. There are also workshops where visitors can experience making music boxes and sandblasted glass, as well as a rental costume shop with around 200 outfits from the Bakumatsu to the Showa period, making it the best choice for travelers to create wonderful memories.
