🛍️ Hida Takayama Miyagawa Morning Market

📝 Introduction

Encounter famous local specialties or interact with the locals at the busiest morning market in Hida Takayama.

📖 Details

The "Miyagawa Morning Market," located along the riverbank from Kaji Bridge to Yayoi Bridge near Hida Takayama, is a historic morning market that began in the Edo period. It is renowned as one of Japan's three major morning markets, alongside Ishikawa Prefecture's "Wajima Morning Market" and Chiba Prefecture's "Katsuura Morning Market." The number of stalls varies depending on the weather, but the market operates year-round without a day off. The outdoor stalls, covered with white awnings, stretch about 350 meters and can host up to 30 to 40 vendors. Local producers and their families sell freshly harvested seasonal vegetables, fruits, flowers, pickles, and mochi products. There are also stalls selling handmade crafts and artisanal goods. One of the joys of visiting the Miyagawa Morning Market is chatting with the stall owners who speak the simple and gentle "Takayama dialect." Encountering a warm smile, learning about the flavors and cooking methods of rare vegetables, and experiencing the healing warmth of face-to-face interactions all add to the pleasure of shopping. In recent years, several stalls offering takeout food such as coffee, desserts, and skewers for on-site tasting have also been added, making it a delightful experience to walk around and eat instead of having breakfast.
