🗺️ Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art京都国立近代美術館

The Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art, which opened in 1963 in Okazaki Park, is a branch of the National Museum of Modern Art. The current building, completed in 1986, was designed with a height that harmonizes with the landscape of the park, keeping it lower than the large torii gate of Heian Shrine. Considering the overall trends in Japanese modern and contemporary art history, the museum focuses its collection and exhibitions on artworks from Kyoto, as well as the Kansai region and western Japan. The collection spans a wide range of categories, including painting, sculpture, and printmaking, and also makes significant efforts to collect crafts such as ceramics and textiles. Additionally, it houses overseas works that have influenced or contributed to Japanese art. Several times a year, the museum holds collection exhibitions, selecting and rotating works from its extensive holdings. The themed special exhibitions often receive enthusiastic responses. Inside the museum, from the glass-floored shop to the café with an open terrace, visitors can enjoy views of the shores of the Biwa Canal. The spring scenery, with cherry blossoms blooming along the canal, is particularly enchanting.

The museum located in Okazaki Park collects and displays various types of modern and contemporary art, primarily from Kyoto and Western Japan. It regularly hosts collection exhibitions and special exhibitions. Visitors can enjoy views of the canal from within the museum or the café.
