🎎 Naked Demon Bonfire Festival

📝 Introduction

A winter festival that represents the charm of the Oga traditional rituals.

📖 Details

The winter festival allows visitors to fully experience the charm of the traditional ritual "Namahage" in Oga. The Namahage Sedo Festival is held on the second Saturday of February, along with the preceding and following Friday and Sunday, in Oga City, Akita Prefecture. With a history of over 60 years, it is a representative winter tourism event. The festival combines the sacred event "Sedo Festival" held at "Mayama Shrine" on January 3rd each year with the traditional custom of "Namahage," which has been passed down in the Oga region, attracting many tourists to experience it. The festival begins with the sacred "Yunomai" kagura performance and the traditional ritual "Chin-kama Matsuri." This is followed by the reenactment of the New Year's Eve custom in the Oga region—the traditional ritual of "Namahage" visiting households. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the wild "Namahage Dance" performed by two Namahage figures and the powerful "Namahage Taiko" played by the Namahage in the kagura hall. The grand finale features the Namahage, holding torches, emerging from the snowy mountains, crossing the area, and showcasing the climax of the festival. Interacting with the various Namahage figures from different parts of Oga, each with unique designs, is also a major highlight of the festival. On the day of the event, it is recommended to visit the nearby "Namahage Museum" and "Oga Mayama Heritage Hall" to gain a deeper understanding of Namahage culture and purchase unique souvenirs. Temporary parking is available around the venue, and there are paid shuttle buses departing from Oga Station and Oga Onsen, making transportation quite convenient.
