🎎 Zōbeiyamagama Ceramic Workshop - Clay Handbuilding Experience

📝 Introduction

In the beautiful nature of the island, one cultivates their character and spirit through the study of pottery.

📖 Details

In a corner of the western part of Yuge Island, facing the vast sea, ceramic artist Mr. Muneyuki Furukawa operates his studio and gallery "Tobō Dotsu." After studying Bizen pottery in Okayama Prefecture, one of Japan's six representative ancient kilns, he returned to his hometown of Yuge Island to start his own business. Bizen pottery, which is fired without coloring or glazing, is a simple ceramic that showcases the original texture of the clay. The way the kiln is loaded and the firing process, combined with the natural power of the kiln, create various shades and forms. Even if the shapes are the same, the firing results will never be identical; each piece is unique. To create such captivating Bizen pottery on Yuge Island, Mr. Furukawa also built his own climbing kiln. During the pottery-making experience, participants can focus on creating their own unique ceramics. Unlike ordinary pottery, Bizen ware has water-absorbing properties, and over time, the surface of the pottery changes, becoming a cherished item that one grows to love more with use. Would you like to create a piece of pottery that is exclusively yours as a memory of your island journey? Additionally, for those who are short on time, you can also admire Mr. Furukawa's works displayed in the gallery, where you will surely discover the essence of Japanese tradition and craftsmanship.
