🛍️ Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store

📝 Introduction

Regarded as the gateway to Nihonbashi, it was established 350 years ago and is Japan's first department store.

📖 Details

Founded in 1673 as a clothing store called "Echigoya," it has a proud tradition of 350 years. In 1904, it published the "Department Store Declaration," and for many years, the Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store, regarded as the gateway to Nihonbashi, became Japan's first department store. The main building, which was expanded in 1935, features a lion statue that symbolizes Mitsukoshi at the entrance, and a giant statue of a celestial maiden stands in the soaring central hall, leaving a deep impression on visitors. The building combines Renaissance architectural styles with Art Deco elements and extensively uses marble, making it a department store with significant historical value, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Inside the main and new buildings, there are attractive stores featuring luxury brands, trendy fashion, gourmet food, and home appliances. The first floor of the main building, renovated in 2018, was designed by architect Kengo Kuma and includes "Personal Shopping Service Counters" on each floor. Professional consultants from various departments provide shopping assistance related to fashion items, gifts, and more. During shopping breaks, it is recommended to take a moment to relax at the "Nihonbashi Garden" on the top floor of the main building.
