Kaiyukan is an aquarium located in Osaka, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2020. The facility recreates the natural environment surrounding the Pacific Ocean and showcases 620 species, totaling 30,000 marine animals.
After passing through the tunnel-shaped tank "Fish Crossing Path: Underwater Tunnel," visitors can take the escalator to the 8th floor. While descending the slope, they can enjoy a variety of creatures in the large tank. Highlights include the "Antarctica" where penguins live; the "Tasman Sea" where Pacific bottlenose dolphins greet visitors; the "Great Barrier Reef" filled with colorful fish; and the "Chilean Rock Zone" where schools of sardines swim in the same direction. Each tank offers a captivating experience.
The most iconic highlight is the "Pacific" tank. This giant tank is 9 meters deep, 34 meters long, and holds 5,400 tons of water, accommodating large marine animals such as whale sharks and rays. Observing the fish swimming gracefully here feels like being immersed in a vast underwater world. The newly established "Moon Jelly Galaxy" area is also very popular, where visitors can watch jellyfish elegantly float in a space reminiscent of the cosmic galaxy, providing a soothing experience.
As long as you complete the re-entry procedures, you can re-enter the aquarium on the same day without limit. After around 5 PM, the lighting dims slightly, adding a romantic atmosphere. Additionally, the fish that are active during the day enter a resting period at this time, allowing visitors to observe their nighttime ecology.
For those interested in more detailed ecological information, renting an audio guide is recommended. By wearing the specialized headphones, visitors can listen to explanations while closely observing the marine life (rental fee is 800 yen per device).
