About Marugame Castle
The white wooden castle tower stands majestically atop the beautiful stone walls.
Details
Marugame Castle has a history of 400 years and is a symbol of Marugame City. It was built over a period of five years by the military commander Ikoma Chikamasa and his son Ikoma Iemasa, and is a flatland castle.
The stone walls, which rise from the inner moat to the main keep (tenshu), reach a height of 60 meters, making it the tallest stone wall in Japan. Its unique curved beauty is referred to as "fan-shaped curvature." The tenshu of Marugame Castle is one of only 12 remaining wooden keeps in Japan and has been designated as an Important Cultural Property. Its grayish-white exterior harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding nature. Visitors can enter and from the highest level, the view of the Seto Inland Sea is breathtaking.
Additionally, the "Ote Ichino Mon" gate is also open for viewing, with exhibits explaining the defensive features such as "ishioto" (stone drops). Special events are held throughout the seasons, and at night, the illuminated tenshu displays different colors from those seen during the day, along with food stalls offering local delicacies, creating a lively atmosphere.
