About Rongqiao (戎橋)
The construction of the Ebisubashi Bridge and the excavation of the Dotonbori River almost started at the same time.
Details
The construction of Ebisu Bridge began almost simultaneously with the excavation of Dotonbori River. It is said to have been built in the year 600 and was originally a path leading to the Ikukunitama Shrine. Since ancient times, it has been a must-pass location for many people heading to nearby puppet theaters, known as "kugutsu-asobi." In the past, it was called "Sōbashi" (which sounds similar to "sōrō," meaning puppet theater) and was renamed Eiseibashi in 1867.
The current Ebisu Bridge was rebuilt in 2007, designed based on the best submissions collected from both domestic and international sources. It still serves as a connecting road from Shinsaibashi-suji shopping street to Ebisu-bashi shopping street, with a constant flow of people crossing the bridge. Additionally, it is the center of the bustling Namba district, making it a popular gathering spot for many.
From the bridge, you can see the giant sign featuring the "Glico Running Man," which has become a famous tourist attraction. When visiting, don't forget to strike a pose like the Running Man for a memorable photo!
Highlights
The design of the Rongqiao bridge is based on the best works collected from both domestic and international submissions. Located in the heart of the bustling commercial district in the southern area, it has also become a gathering spot. Taking photos on the bridge with the Glico Man as a backdrop serves as a memorable souvenir of Osaka sightseeing.
