🎎 Sanriku International Art Festival

📝 Introduction

A festival centered around the idea of preserving local traditional arts and performances.

📖 Details

After the Great East Japan Earthquake, an art festival was held in 2014 as modern dancers visited the disaster-stricken areas to assist in reconstruction efforts. Initially, only four municipalities from the Sanriku region participated, but starting in 2018, municipalities from the Sanriku area, Iwate Prefecture, and private organizations began to collaborate, and it has now expanded to 15 municipalities in Sanriku. The focus of the art festival is on "dance and traditional performing arts." The Sanriku coastal area is home to many local performing arts groups that have been nurtured and passed down through harsh natural environments, such as "Shika-mai," "Ken-mai," "Tora-mai," "Misaki-mai," "NANYADOYARA," and "Kagura," which are considered a unique treasure trove of traditional performing arts in the world. It is hoped that through exchanges with international performing arts groups and contemporary artists, as well as through "viewing" and "experiential" activities, the charm of local traditional performing arts can be conveyed to the world, promoting regional development and revitalization.
