🛍️ Shichimiya Honpo

📝 Introduction

A seven-spice chili shop that has been in business since the Edo period is one of the "three great seven-spice blends" in Japan.

📖 Details

Shichimiya Honten is a specialty store for Shichimi Togarashi, ranked as one of the "Three Great Shichimi" in Japan. Established in 1655 at the intersection of Kiyomizu-zaka and Sannenzaka, which leads to Kiyomizu Temple, it originally operated as a tea shop. At that time, it provided free "pepper water," which was chili powder mixed with plain water, to worshippers visiting Kiyomizu Temple and practitioners at the Otowa Waterfall. To warm the body, the shop mixed chili peppers with sansho, sesame, and hemp seeds, which later became the foundation for its transformation into a Shichimi Togarashi specialty store. There is no strict definition for the ingredients of Shichimi Togarashi, and each shop has its own unique blend. Shichimiya Honten uses aromatic ingredients such as sansho, hemp seeds, white sesame, black sesame, nori powder, and aoshiso, creating a rich fragrance. Just a sprinkle of Shichimi Togarashi can enhance the flavor of dishes. Additionally, the official website offers many recipes using Shichimi Togarashi, which you might find helpful while cooking. Moreover, the shop also sells other spices such as sansho, ichimi, and yuzu ichimi. Purchasing a unique Japanese spice as a souvenir is highly recommended.
