📝 Introduction

📖 Details

Amakara惠那本店 (あまから恵那本店) is a long-established gohei rice cake shop located in Oi-juku on the Nakasendo, an area that preserves many historic buildings. With over 65 years of history, this shop specializes in gohei-mochi. Gohei-mochi is a local dish originating from mountainous regions in Gifu, Aichi, and Nagano Prefectures, made by pounding rice into a paste, shaping it onto skewers, and grilling it with a flavorful sauce. The shape and sauce of gohei-mochi vary by region, shop, and family. This shop's gohei-mochi is made from 100% locally sourced glutinous rice, shaped into dumplings. The signature sauce, a secret recipe made with a base of sugar and soy sauce, incorporates a generous amount of sesame and high-quality walnuts. The chewy dumplings, coated in the sweet and savory sauce, are grilled to perfection, releasing an enticing aroma that whets the appetite. In addition to the gohei-mochi that can be taken out as a single skewer, the shop also offers dine-in options such as a set of six skewers (with pickles) for one person and a gohei-mochi set meal (six skewers served with miso soup, pickled mountain vegetables, and fruit). They also sell raw gohei-mochi and homemade sauce, which can be used not only for gohei-mochi but also for mixing with vegetables, tofu dengaku, grilled rice balls, and various other dishes, making it a highly praised versatile sauce.
