About Amanohashidate Shrine

The shrine standing in the pine forest of Amanohashidate is also known as an energy spot famous for achieving love.

Details

Amanohashidate features a sandbar that stretches 3.6 kilometers in a curved line, surrounded by a spectacular natural pine forest, and is listed as one of Japan's Three Views. The Amanohashidate Shrine, also known as "Hashidate Myojin," stands amidst the pine trees, about a 10-minute walk from the rotating bridge and the Great Amanohashidate Bridge. Originally, the Amanohashidate Shrine served as a guardian shrine for the Monju Hall of Chion-ji Temple. Many local legends are related to dragons, with tales suggesting that Amanohashidate was built overnight by a dragon god piling up earth, which is why the Eight Great Dragon Kings are enshrined here. The "Amanohashidate Myth" also mentions that a deity from the heavens created a heavenly bridge to meet a goddess on earth, which accidentally collapsed, forming what is now known as Amanohashidate, a famous energy spot. It is said that visiting nearby shrines such as Moto-Ise Kago Shrine and Manai Shrine can lead to good relationships and is quite popular. Facing the left side of the main hall, "Iso Shimizu" is a miraculous spring that, despite Amanohashidate being surrounded by the sea, produces fresh water. The Heian period poet Izumi Shikibu composed poems here, and it has been selected as one of Japan's 100 Famous Waters. Visitors can wash their hands here before worshiping, but please note that it is not for drinking.
