🍜 Asakusa Sumo Stable

📝 Introduction

A new type of experience facility where you can enjoy a sumo hot pot while watching the sumo performances on the ring in front of you.

📖 Details

Sumo wrestling is a national sport of Japan that has been passed down since the Edo period. It is very popular among foreign tourists visiting Japan, and tickets for matches are often hard to come by. Visiting a sumo training stable has many traditional regulations, making it somewhat difficult for newcomers to enter. This facility, set to open in January 2024, addresses all these challenges. At the center of the venue is a dohyo, crafted from the same materials and specifications as those used in the Ryogoku Kokugikan and sumo training stables, making it an "authentic" dohyo. Guests can enjoy a traditional sumo hot pot made with carefully selected ingredients, supervised by a former rikishi who served as a "sumo ban" (responsible for meal preparation) during their active years, while seated around the dohyo. After the meal, the eagerly anticipated sumo performance begins. Former rikishi and current active rikishi demonstrate basic movements and conduct matches, providing an understanding of the fundamental knowledge of sumo. Following this, participants can enter the challenge time. Volunteers can wear sumo doll costumes and challenge themselves to a match against a former rikishi. Standing on a real dohyo, they experience the precious moment of transforming into a rikishi, much to the delight of the participating guests! After the challenge time, they can also take commemorative photos with the former rikishi. The venue is located in the Asakusa area, which preserves traditional Japanese culture, near Senso-ji Temple and Nakamise Shopping Street, just a 2-minute walk from the Tsukuba Express "Asakusa" station, making it conveniently accessible. Here, visitors can joyfully explore the world of sumo, and if they develop a further interest in sumo, it is recommended to watch an official sumo match afterwards.
