About Hozenji, Fufu Zenza
The famous dessert at Hōzenji Yokocho is known for bringing good fortune to couples.
Details
The dessert shop, which opened in Meiji 16 (1883), is located next to the Suikake Fudōson, a site that retains traditional charm. With a history of over 140 years, the shop's signature dish "Fūfu Zenza" serves a portion of red bean soup in two bowls. As the name suggests, couples or spouses sharing this dish can enhance their relationship, and it is said that if two people who have feelings for each other eat it together, their romance will flourish. The traditional way to enjoy it is for each person to have two bowls.
In Shōwa 15 (1940), the novel "Fūfu Zenza" written by the representative pure literary author from Kansai, Oda Sakunosuke, sparked a wave of popularity. Today, it remains a beloved delicacy in Hozenji Yokocho.
Using the rare Tanba Dainagon red beans that were once offered to the imperial family, the slowly simmered red bean soup has a refreshing and elegant sweetness. During the scorching summer, they also offer "Ice Zenza," which features fluffy shaved ice drizzled with syrup and condensed milk, topped with Tanba Dainagon red beans and mochi, available in matcha and milk flavors, boasting many loyal fans.
