About Asakusa Toyokan
Asakusa's performance venue, a comedy holy land that has produced stars like Takeshi Kitano.
Details
Asakusa Tōyōkan is a representative performance venue in Asakusa and even Tokyo, bringing performances such as "iromono" (manzai, storytelling) that are deeply rooted in the comedic culture of Asakusa over the years. Its official name is "Asakusa Franceza Performance Hall Tōyōkan." Outstanding performers like Kiyoshi Atsumi and Hachirō Ōtō have performed here, and it later developed into a well-known television star hub. Among them, the most famous is Takeshi Kitano, who honed his performance skills as an elevator attendant here before shining as part of the manzai duo "Two Beat."
Currently, daytime performances run from 12:30 PM to 5 PM, open year-round without a break. Every day, around 15 to 20 groups of performers, ranging from beginners to seasoned artists, showcase a variety of entertainment including manzai, storytelling, short plays, magic, and traditional arts. Tickets for performances are generally sold on the day at the theater. You can check the performers on the website before heading over, or spontaneously decide to watch the performances of new artists. Occasionally, well-known performers from television also perform here, making it a must-visit pilgrimage site for comedy fans.
