About Yoshiyama Forest Railway
Board the train that was once used for transporting timber.
Details
The Yoshiwara Forest Railway is a restored train originally used for transporting timber in the Nakagata region (Nahanri Town, Tano Town, Yasuda Town, Kitagawa Village, and Maruge Village) in the eastern part of Kochi Prefecture, which thrived in forestry. A railway has been laid out around the approximately 400-meter perimeter of Maruyama Park, and it is open for riding experiences every Sunday and on national holidays.
The railway began transporting timber in 1907 (Meiji 10), and by 1921 (Taisho 10), powered locomotives were introduced for transport. The forest railway ceased operations in 1963 (Showa 38), and part of the track was converted into a roadway, with trucks taking over the transportation of timber.
As part of the cultural heritage recognized by the Cultural Affairs Agency, "From the Forest Railway to Japan's Yuzu Road - The Scenic and Culinary Culture of Nankoku Tosa and the Nakagata Region, Fragrant with Yuzu," the dynamic display of the Nomura-style powered train head, which constitutes cultural property, is also showcased here.
In addition to the riding experience, visitors can also experience driving the train. On the beautiful 400-meter route, one can slowly circle twice while passing through cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves, making it a truly valuable experience.
Highlights
