📖 Details
Ashikaga has been a city thriving on textiles since ancient times. One of the recommended experiences to explore this historic city is to visit the "Ashikaga District Study and Experience Center." Inside the center, there are not only brochures and travel guides related to Ashikaga's traditional textile industry, but also services such as the rental of kimonos and samurai armor, with free dressing assistance for guests, allowing visitors to fully experience the unique traditional charm and cultural characteristics of Ashikaga. The kimonos available for rent include high-quality garments made from the traditional textile "Ashikaga Meisen."
Ashikaga Meisen is a type of silk-dyed plain weave fabric that became popular in Japan from the Taisho era (1912–1926) to the early Showa period (1926–1989). It is characterized by intentionally offsetting the positions of the warp and weft to create a blurred and ethereal effect at the intersections of the threads. The bold and vibrant styles and patterns align perfectly with the romantic and dreamy backdrop of the Taisho era, making it a trendsetter of that time. As one of the five major production areas of Meisen, Ashikaga Meisen is also highly regarded for its stunning patterns and excellent quality. The bold designs and brilliant colors still evoke a sense of modern fashion today, making it a symbol of retro-modern Japan loved by contemporary people.
At the Ashikaga District Study and Experience Center, you can wear a kimono or don samurai armor and stroll through the quaint streets of Ashikaga, experiencing an unforgettable journey that feels like a trip through time.
