📖 Details

Atami Onsen is a hot spring resort located in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture, with a history of over 1,500 years. The Atami hot spring area boasts more than 500 hot spring sources, 90% of which are high-temperature springs with concentrated effective ingredients, making it a representative large hot spring resort in Japan. The name "Atami" comes from the hot springs that rise from the sea, heating the seawater. When the hot springs were opened in 749 AD, the springs emerging from the seabed made it impossible for local residents to fish. The high priest of Hakone Shrine, Manjū Shōnin, prayed to Yakushi Nyorai to move the spring source to the current "Oyu Geothermal Area," thus beginning the history of Atami Onsen. Since then, many feudal lords, including the Tokugawa clan, have visited Atami to recuperate and enjoy the hot springs. The scenery of Atami became famous due to the representative work "Konjiki Yasha" by Meiji-era novelist Ozaki Kōyō, which brought great fame to Atami and made it a popular tourist destination. Like the oldest historical records of Izu, both the volume and temperature of the hot springs are on a very large scale, with a total output of approximately 19,100 liters per minute. Among the more than 500 hot spring sources, about 90% have temperatures above 42 degrees Celsius, with an average temperature of around 63 degrees, making it the hottest hot spring destination in Japan. For thousands of years, the rich spring veins have continuously supplied high-temperature hot springs. Today, there are still many accommodation facilities, public baths for day use, and large-scale hot spring resorts, keeping this hot spring town vibrant. Additionally, a key point in the history of Atami Onsen is the hot spring sources known as "Atami Nan-yu." It was once one of the world's three great geysers; although it no longer erupts naturally, there is a monument nearby that recreates the scene of that time. It is recommended to experience the history of Atami Onsen while visiting the various hot springs.
