📝 Introduction
The "Festival of Light," adorned with 30,000 yellow lanterns, illuminates the night of Kudanshita in Tokyo.
📖 Details
The Yasukuni Shrine's Mitama Matsuri is an annual festival held from July 13 to 16. Based on ancient Japanese customs, it began in the post-war Showa era, specifically in 1947, and has a history of over 75 years. Today, it has become a summer tradition in Tokyo, attracting more than 100,000 visitors each year.
Inside the shrine grounds, there are over 30,000 lanterns donated by individuals and groups, creating a dazzling display in the night sky, along with "lantern boxes" inscribed by various artists. Every night, a ritual to comfort the spirits is held at the main hall. Additionally, there are a series of activities including portable shrine parades, Aomori Nebuta, Awa Odori, Edo arts Kappore, marching bands, special flower exhibitions, various performing arts offerings, and traditional Bon Odori dances, all enveloped in a festive atmosphere both day and night.
Furthermore, during the festival, "Nighttime Courtyard Worship" is held (with a participation fee of 1,000 yen per person). The courtyard, which is usually closed to the public, is opened for worship during this period.
