About Goto Museum of Art
National treasures and precious collections are deeply moving.
Details
Founded by Tokyu Group's founder Keita Gotō (1882-1959) in 1960, this private art museum primarily showcases hand-copied ancient texts and precious artworks collected by Gotō during his long career in the railway industry. The museum currently houses approximately 5,000 items, including 5 national treasures and 50 important cultural properties, and holds 6 to 7 exhibitions each year, along with 1 to 2 special exhibitions.
Each exhibition features different content, with the most popular being the spring exhibition of the national treasure "Genji Monogatari Emaki" and the autumn exhibition of the national treasure "Murasaki Shikibu Nikki Emaki," both attracting many enthusiasts during their run.
The architectural beauty of the museum, which incorporates designs reminiscent of royal and noble sleeping quarters, is another highlight for visitors. Additionally, the expansive grounds of 6,000 tsubo, including gardens, are adorned with seasonal blooms such as weeping cherry trees and azaleas, allowing visitors to enjoy leisurely walks and flower viewing.
Highlights
Hand-copied ancient scriptures and precious artworks are open for public viewing. Every spring, the national treasure "Genji Monogatari Emaki" is exhibited, and in autumn, the national treasure "Murasaki Shikibu Nikki Emaki" is showcased.
