🗺️ Hakone Museum of Art
🎨 Attraction Gallery
📝 Introduction
The museum that gathers Japanese ceramics, along with the beautiful gardens designated as national scenic spots, is also very charming.
📖 Details
The Hakone Museum of Art was founded by entrepreneur and religious figure Okada Mokichi. It was constructed between 1944 and 1953, and opened in 1952 within its own garden, "Shinsenkyō." The garden captures the views of the Hakone mountain range and Sagami Beach, blending the beauty of natural landscapes with that of an artificial garden. It features a "Moss Garden" adorned with about 130 varieties of moss and 200 maple trees, a "Stone Garden" with an exquisite arrangement of large stones (partially not open to the public), a "Bamboo Garden," and a "Path of Hagi," allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery of all four seasons. Due to this beautiful landscape, it was designated as a national scenic spot in March 2021.
The museum's exterior is designed in a Chinese style to complement the Bamboo Garden, featuring green tiled roofs. The permanent exhibition inside showcases ancient Japanese ceramics, including Jomon pottery, haniwa, jars and pots from the six ancient kilns of the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, and painted ceramics from the Edo period. There are also special exhibitions displaying tea sets from the Momoyama period and ceramics from the Ming and Qing dynasties in China.
Additionally, there is a tea room called "Mawatei," where visitors can enjoy matcha and a seasonal Japanese dessert set for 800 yen while overlooking the garden. The museum shop offers original products featuring paintings and other items, making it worthwhile to visit.
