About Hayama Town

A picturesque town known for its royal residence.

Details

Hayama Town is located in the western part of the Miura Peninsula, a hilly town facing Sagami Bay. On clear days, it offers scenic views of the Izu Peninsula and Mount Fuji. The coastline stretches 4 kilometers north and south, featuring the beautiful "Hayama Coast," where stunning beaches and rocky shores intertwine, making it a bustling seaside resort in summer. This area is also known as the "birthplace of Japanese sailing," hosting numerous competitions. In the inland areas of Hayama Town, there are many terraced rice fields, where rice and the local specialty "Hayama vegetables" are cultivated amidst ancient mountain and rural landscapes. Additionally, rare breed cattle known as "Hayama beef" are raised here. Moreover, Hayama Town has long been a famous villa area. Along the coast lies the "Hayama Imperial Villa," which has been used by the imperial family for rest since the 27th year of the Meiji era (1894), along with many residences and villas of notable figures from various fields. The shrine "Morito Shrine," founded by Minamoto no Yoritomo, and the Western-style building "Old Jesus' Sisterhood Convent," part of the former Hayama Villa of the Higashi-Fushimi family built in the 3rd year of the Taisho era (1914), are among the many historical heritages from ancient times to the present. There is also the "Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, Hayama," which serves as a center for the dissemination of art. In recent years, it has also become a popular gourmet destination, attracting attention for its high-quality restaurants, dessert shops, and bakeries.
