About Meiji Jingu Museum
A museum showcasing items related to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, the deities of Meiji Shrine.
Details
The Meiji Jingu Museum is located next to the approach of Meiji Jingu, surrounded by towering trees, and was opened in 2019 as part of the centennial celebration of the shrine's establishment. It is a museum that preserves and displays items related to the deities of Meiji Jingu, Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken.
The museum was designed by the architectural master Kengo Kuma, integrating the building into the lush greenery of the shrine's forest, characterized by its gently sloping roof. On the second floor, the treasure exhibition room showcases precious items such as the carriage "Rokutōhikiyō" that Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken rode on the day of the promulgation ceremony of the Constitution of the Empire of Japan, as well as portraits of the Emperor and Empress painted by the Italian artist Edoardo Chiossone.
Additionally, the second floor features a planning exhibition room that hosts special and planned exhibitions with regularly changing content. The "Forest Exhibition Room" on the first floor introduces the history and daily activities of Meiji Jingu through models and images, and it is recommended to visit this room before proceeding to the shrine for worship.
