About Hiraodai National Park
The limestone scattered across the Karst Plateau looks like a flock of sheep playing on the grass.
Details
Designated as one of Japan's three major karst landscapes, this natural park is situated at an elevation ranging from 350 to 600 meters. It extends 6 kilometers from north to south and is about 2 kilometers wide from east to west. The karst plateau is dotted with limestone formations resembling flocks of sheep, creating a fantastical landscape.
The limestone of Hiraodai is said to have evolved from the remains of marine organisms (corals and sponges) that lived near the equator 340 million years ago, which were moved to the present-day Hiraodai through tectonic shifts. Later, due to the erosion and dissolution caused by rainwater, the karst topography was formed. This unique landscape took an incredibly long time to develop. In addition to the trails scattered with limestone, there are also stalactite caves to explore.
To protect and nurture such precious nature and pass it down through generations, the "Hiraodai Nature Observation Center" has been established. It is recommended to use this center as a base for exploring Hiraodai. The center displays images and three-dimensional models of Hiraodai's nature, scenery, and flowers, allowing visitors to gain a preliminary understanding of Hiraodai before embarking on outdoor explorations.
Beneath the surface, there are about 200 stalactite caves, among which the "Senbutsu Stalactite Cave," with a length exceeding 1000 meters, has been designated as a national natural monument. The mysterious world spreads underground, and the "Cave Exploration Experience Activities," which allow for the exploration of various caves, are also very popular.
"Hiraodai Nature Village" is a recreational center equipped with a campsite, glamping facilities, parks, restaurants, and more.
