About Inujima Seirensho Art Museum
The abandoned copper smelting factory on Inujima has been transformed into a revitalized art museum.
Details
In the early days, Inujima thrived on copper smelting and mining. The ruins of factories that produced slag bricks and chimneys have been designated as "Modern Industrial Heritage." In 2008, under the concept of "Using what you have to create what you don't," one of the ruins, the copper smelting factory, was transformed into the Inujima Seirensho Art Museum. Inside the museum, works created by Yanagishita Yukinori inspired by Yukio Mishima are on display.
The building, designed by Hiroshi Sanbunichi, utilizes natural energy sources such as solar and geothermal energy to reduce environmental impact. It incorporates a system that achieves high water purification using the power of plants. The ticket center's café offers local representative dishes such as octopus rice and Inujima red bean soup.
In addition to the "House Project," which showcases a variety of artworks, the island also features the Inujima "Living Plant Garden," allowing visitors to naturally enjoy the pleasures of art and island life.
Highlights
At the Inujima Seirensho Art Museum and Inujima "House Project," you can deeply explore art. There are also related tours of the ruins of the Inujima Smelter.
