Opened grandly in 2018, the aquarium focuses on marine life from the nearby Sea of Japan, showcasing approximately 300 species and 4,500 underwater creatures. The highlight is the "UMIGATARI Large Tank," which recreates the underwater topography of the Joetsu coastal area of the Sea of Japan at a scale of 1/10,000. The tank is home to 50 species and 38,000 individuals, including schools of sardines, lumpfish, and short-tailed stingrays. Other must-see attractions include a lively dolphin show set against the backdrop of the Sea of Japan, the museum housing the largest number of Magellanic penguins in Japan, and the adorable spotted seal area. The souvenir shop offers a variety of original products, such as plush toys and keychains featuring the animals displayed in the tanks, making for great mementos. The restaurant serves a range of dishes made with local ingredients, so if you get hungry after your visit, you can enjoy a meal there.
