About Jōzō-ji (Seizō-ji)
Adjacent to the breathtaking scenic spot Amanohashidate, there is a temple that is said to bless those who visit with the fulfillment of their wishes.
Details
Built in 704, this shrine is located on the slopes of Narita Mountain (鼓之岳) and offers a view of the scenic Amanohashidate in Miyazu City, Kyoto Prefecture. The name "Narita" means "wishes come true." It is said that the main deity, Kannon (観世音菩薩), transformed into a deer to save a starving monk, earning the nickname "Substitute Kannon." Visiting this shrine is believed to beautify both body and mind, which is why it is also affectionately called "Beauty Kannon."
The shrine features several unique attractions, including the "Bottomless Pond," which is associated with a story of repelling a giant snake, the "True Dragon" carved by the Edo period sculptor, Zajingorō, and a five-story pagoda. The Jizō (地蔵) enshrined in the grounds is known as "One Wish, One Word Jizō," and it is said that expressing a wish in one sentence can lead to its fulfillment.
In spring, 3,000 cherry blossoms bloom; in early summer, there are rhododendrons; in autumn, the leaves turn red, and there are night illuminations; and in winter, the scenery is adorned with snow. The beautiful landscapes throughout the four seasons captivate visiting tourists.
After worshipping, it is highly recommended to head to the panoramic viewpoint at the mountain's summit and enjoy a leisurely time at the café "Bijin Saryo" (美人茶寮).
Highlights
The temple's name carries the meaning of "wishes come true." The public firmly believes that worshipping the main deity, the Holy Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, can beautify both body and mind. The "One Wish, One Word Ksitigarbha," known for fulfilling a single wish with a single phrase, is also widely recognized. Visitors can also enjoy the seasonal scenery, including cherry blossoms in spring, rhododendrons in summer, autumn leaves, and snowy landscapes in winter.
